A video is currently going viral of former Florida state senator turned U.S. Secretary of State and acting National Security Advisor Marco Rubio appearing on camera before a blue backdrop, flanked by an American flag, telling the world:

Under President Trump, the United States will stand with the Jewish people. We have implemented a vigorous new visa policy that will prevent foreign nationals from coming to the United States to foment hatred against our Jewish community. We are holding international organizations and nations accountable for rhetoric against Israel that resurfaces in the manifesto of monsters like Yaron and Sarah's killer, but we do see an eventual light at the end of this long tunnel of suffering. One can imagine the Middle East in which the Abraham Accords eventually reign. So, thank you for the opportunity to address you.

Countless accounts have posted the clip across every conceivable social media platform, touting it as proof that Rubio said: “If you criticize Israel, you will be denied a visa to the United States.”

But it’s not real. At least, not in the way people are attempting to make you think it is.

The video clip and, more specifically, the captions that are accompanying it, epitomize the concept of “fake news.”

The clip of Rubio actually hails from May 28, 2025, and captures the last 42 seconds of a 4-minute address that Rubio recorded to be played at the Foreign Minister's Conference on Combating Antisemitism in Jerusalem. Rubio was referencing Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgim, two employees of Israel's Washington embassy who were murdered outside a Jewish Museum in the District of Columbia just days before Rubio made this address.

The clip is being utilized across social media now, more than a year later, as little more than a hoax. Fake news. Satire, at best.

But things begin to get cloudy here. Because Marco Rubio did essentially do exactly what these viral clips are accusing him of, just not in the way they’re portraying it — serving as a stark reminder that, in modern-day America, satire, hoaxes, pranks, and “fake news” often serve as little more than a thin veil over, or even an educated prediction of, the cold, hard truth.

Satire, History’s Way Of Easing The Pain

Satire is defined as “an artistic and literary style that uses humor, irony, and exaggeration to expose and criticize human flaws, corruption, or foolishness in society. Its main goal is not just to make people laugh, but to point out problems and spark change.”

Throughout history, as far back as Ancient Greece and Rome, it’s been utilized as a way for human beings to ease the pain of their suffering through a laugh; and, if it just so happened to spark a bit of change, then all the better. People have been saying some version of, “If I don’t laugh, I’ll cry,” for centuries, and satire serves as a way to put that notion into tangible action.

Satire rose to its Golden Age in the 18th century, when people truly began to harness its power as a vehicle to ignite real change, and exploded into the 19th century with the rise of political cartoons from artists like William Hogarth, James Gillray, Thomas Nast, and vicious literary takedowns from the pens of authors like Charles Dickens and Mark Twain.

Ultimately, nothing is more painful and inspires one to more reform than being made fun of.

But somewhere along the way, as social media grew into the monolithic giant we’re familiar with today, satire began to morph into pranks, deep fakes, hoaxes, and Trump’s personal favorite, “fake news.” It rapidly transformed into not just a thin veil over the truth, but almost an unsettlingly accurate prediction of the future.

The Truth About Marco Rubio

While the clip of Marco Rubio that’s now going viral is an inaccurate cherry-picking, a large seed of truth is still buried just underneath the surface, because Rubio did, in fact, essentially do exactly what these “fake news” clips are accusing him of.

In March 2025, Rubio proudly announced that the US had revoked the visas of at least 300 foreign students as part of a wide-reaching effort to rid the United States of anyone who dared to speak out in support of the Palestinian people and against the State of Israel. Rubio admitted, “We do it every day, every time I find one of these lunatics.”

The Trump Administration landed itself in court over this very tactic.

Just last year, POLITICO reported that Rubio personally, actively worked to create and issue guidance that instructed officials to scour the social media accounts of student visa applicants for any semblance of supposed “antisemitism” — a term that has been twisted by the Trump Administration to no longer mean hatred towards Jewish people, but merely any criticism of Israel at all.

Ultimately, the claims attached to this viral video are fake, yet the undercurrent of what Rubio has done and continues to do is painfully real.

The Pattern of Satire in America

In modern-day America, this pattern of predictability and undercurrent of painful truth that’s found in satirical and “fake” content across social media is far from a new phenomenon.

In fact, The Babylon Bee, a satirical website that describes itself as “the definitive source of fake news you can trust,” once told Fox News that nearly 100 of the right-leaning satirical headlines published on their site ultimately became fulfilled prophecies.

In 2019, The Bee published a satire story with the headline, “Trump: 'I Have Done More For Christianity Than Jesus,’” which was inundated with fact checks and false ratings at the time, only for Trump to turn around and say just that, almost word-for-word in an interview two years later.

Trump himself, along with a countless number of his people, have “joked” about an unconstitutional third Trump term, even as recently as his White House Correspondents’ Dinner earlier this month, only for Trump to slip in an undercurrent of deadly serious truth whenever the opportunity arises, going so far as to brazenly tell NBC's Kristen Welker in May 2025 that he was “not joking” about securing himself a 3rd 4-year round inside the White House.

In this day and age, it’s beginning to feel like satire, hoaxes, and fake news drop the punchline, and reality scrambles to bring it to true fruition. What used to be a massive, comical over-exaggeration is now being used as a rough draft for what’s to come and a synopsis of what has been, and, frankly, that should scare the hell out of you.

If there’s one thing Donald Trump has repeatedly failed at, even to his own recurring demise, it’s shutting his mouth while he’s ahead.

Back in 2021, Capital One conducted a mass purge of Donald Trump’s account, unceremoniously shuttering hundreds upon hundreds of bank accounts connected to Donald Trump and his family’s business group, The Trump Organization.

Trump has labeled Capital One’s move as a witch hunt — as he is wont to do anytime anyone is brazen enough to do anything short of dropping to their knees and licking his tiny, shiny, lifted shoes — claiming both publicly and in his lawsuit against the massive, nationally recognized bank that their decision to debank his accounts what directly tied to the infamous and deadly January 6th insurrection.

If Trump had not opened his mouth in such a way, Capital One would not have been forced to respond by formally tying Donald Trump and his organization to suspected money laundering behaviors for the first time in history.

But, as I stated before, the man simply does not know how to shut up while he’s ahead.

Capital One has now filed a motion with the Florida federal court requesting that the sitting United States president’s lawsuit against them be dismissed. In that filing, attorneys for the behemoth American bank were forced to say the quiet part loud: the bank’s own filings, coupled with the Trump Organization’s allegations, “make clear that Capital One closed Plaintiffs' accounts for anti-money laundering ('AML') reasons."

Capital One revealed that they came to the decision to debank hundreds of Trump-tied accounts only after “months of analysis and a careful review" by the financial crimes team; a team that, in their filing, the bank made clear was fully staffed with employees who boast “decades of law enforcement experience.” In short, average Joes did not make this determination. Highly educated and experienced professionals who have spent decades of their lives sniffing out bullshit schemes did.

And Donald Trump’s big mouth personally opened the door to allow them to announce as much to the world.

All told, roughly 385 accounts connected to the Trump Organization, Eric Trump, and a variety of affiliated businesses — including but not limited to a winery, a bottled-water company, and a golf course developer — that had been banking with Capital One for upwards of a decade were caught in the massive debanking sweep in mid-2021.

Since his return to the White House in 2025, Trump has launched his lawsuit against Capital One with the allegation that the bank unceremoniously closed his accounts in an effort to distance itself from Donald Trump in the wake of the infamous January 6th riot at the United States Capitol Building, going so far as to claim in an amended compaint filed earlier in July of this year that the accusations of suspected money laundrering and financial crimes were made up after the fact, to be used as a cover story to hide their political motivations.

Capital One called bull.

Attorneys for the bank noted that it “never publicized the termination decision nor its confidential internal process giving rise to the closure,'“ and went the extra mile to give the Trump companies months, plus countless extensions, to move their money to another bank, which they eventually did.

But the bank took things a step further than simply disputing Trump’s allegations with facts, going so far as to cite their contractual right to close any account “at any time, for any or no reason and without notice.”

Capital One pushed further still against an additional complaint the Trump legal team added in July, claiming that the bank committed fraud against their client by remaining silent about their reasoning behind their decision to shutter his accounts.

Attorneys for the bank made it clear that they are under no obligation to explain themselves to any account holder who has found themselves debanked. In fact, federal banking-secrecy laws would actually disallow them from disclosing any internal anti-money-laundering investigations or findings, even if they wanted to.

Back in March, an earlier version of this same lawsuit was already dismissed by the presiding judge, Roy Altman, who ruled that a bank’s decision to close any account under such an open-ended and wide-sweeping contract clause was not generally open for additional debate within the courts.

As Trump has now filed an additional complaint against the bank, Capital One is now calling on Judge Altman to permanently dismiss the president’s complaint this time, leaving no avenue for Trump to refile.

This serves as just another prime example of Donald Trump personally shoveling himself into a hole so deep he can’t see daylight.

Shutting up and moving his money to some other crooked bank was always an option. He knew what they were doing with those bank accounts.

But instead, he chose the equivalent of blasting off a flare next to the dead body. And now look what he’s done…

Missouri parent and organizer Sierra Kilpatrick joined Donna Schwartz Mills and I on a Substack Live so Kilpatrick could explain the draconian consequences of this amendment’s passage.

“It's our government trying to repeal income tax in the state of Missouri, which would then create an $8 billion deficit in our state, which we are already in a deficit,” Kilpatrick explained. “And they plan to make up that deficit by increasing sales tax on services. So haircuts, plumbing, your plumber that comes, HVAC, things like that, which would be devastating to a lot of people because they already don't pay sales tax on all those different amenities.”

For perspective, the current state deficit is $138 million. This amendment would cause an $8 billion overall deficit with a $1.4 billion-with-a-b deficit to public schools.

Kilpatrick noted that for public schools in areas with local property taxes, they might be okay for awhile, but rural schools would be wiped out right away, just the way the federal government has wiped out rural hospitals and basic healthcare in rural areas.

The Pattern:

POLITICO has obtained a trove of emails between state and federal officials as well as more than 150 pages of documents that were submitted to FEMA by New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island that seem to prove that, under Donald Trump’s “leadership,” disaster relief in the United States now comes with a political litmus test stapled to the back.

The deep dive made the disturbing discovery that Trump’s blatant partisanship and discrimination were not limited to the February snowstorm. In fact, Donald Trump has personally spearheaded the rejection of disaster aid for Democratic-run states at the highest rate the Federal Emergency Management Agency has ever seen in its 47 years of existence.

Following an E&E News analysis of POLITICO’s new findings, Washington Senator Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, said, “Never in my lifetime has a president treated disaster relief as a political cudgel.”

“What President Trump has done to politicize disaster relief and hold up support for Americans who need it — including my constituents in Washington state — is frankly unforgivable.”

The Numbers:

• 89% — the approval rate for disaster aid requests from Republican-led states.

• 23% — the approval rate for requests from Democratic-led states.

• 67% — the approval rating of disaster relief to Democratic-led states under every president since Reagan. Both George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush approved a higher percentage of requests from Democratic-led states than Republican-led. Interestingly enough, so did Donald Trump during his first term.

• 80 days vs. 39 days — the average wait time for a decision for Republican-led states vs. Democratic-led states.

• $227 million — the combined disaster aid requested from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island after February’s blizzard.

• 6 — the number of Republican-led states approved for disaster aid two days before the four Democratic-led states received denials. Many of the claims that were approved for Red states in this time span documented significantly less damage than the Blue states that were rejected.

• 8 out of 10 — the rate of denials for Democratic-led states despite extreme levels of damage documented by FEMA, following in-person, on-the-ground inspections in each state.

The Excuses

The Trump White House has repeatedly failed to explain the massive, multi-million dollar gap that has grown between disaster relief for Democratic and Republican-led states in his second term, instead taking the route of feigned ignorance.

Responding to E&E News’ findings, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said:

There is no politicization to the President’s decisions on disaster aid.

President Trump provides a more thorough review of disaster declaration requests than any Administration has before him — gone are the days of rubber stamping FEMA recommendations.

Jackson pointedly failed to actually address E&E News’ findings at all.

The Department of Homeland Security, FEMA’s parent agency, also indicated that this problem simply did not exist:

Any suggestion that disaster decisions are politically motivated does not reflect how the process works or how FEMA carries out its mission.

Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins made an attempt at a slightly different tactic, acknowledging the gap, but placing the blame squarely on Democrats who she says are responsible for the matter due to their efforts to slow the distribution of disaster aid by forcing a partial government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.

FEMA now claims that it has “returned to a more rigorous review process" to ensure aid isn't granted for "routine or expected weather events.” In reality, their “rigorous review” process clearly shirks the physical damages and focuses their review on the political standing of the states’ leadership and congressional members.

What It All Means

When you strip away the excuses, the partisan and bureaucratic language, and simply look at what is happening in front of our faces, you will find a presidential administration that no longer operates in good faith. Disaster relief is held hostage at the expense of a political loyalty test. If you do not swear an oath of devotion to America’s Dear Leader, your people will suffer. It’s truly that simple.

Sit with that however long you need.

You’ll find no blood in the streets. No blurry, shaky cell phone footage, thick with screams and trauma, will spread like wildfire across social media. There will be no trending hashtags, no midnight vigil nor protest organized. The various Departments of Homeland, Immigration, and National Security will not make a sound. They will not rush to defend their agents against “doxxing,” because there will be no single agent to name. This particular monster will have no face to fill the news headlines. It is merely a cog within a machine that is functioning exactly as it was designed to.

Slowly. Methodically. Legally. Backed by the full force of the United States federal government.

Ticking away in the dark shadows of this country is a version of ICE violence that never goes viral, even as the bodies pile higher and higher and the trauma spreads like a virus through families who will never even be given a public name or voice.

In the early hours of one April morning last year, 43-year-old Nixon Giovanni Pérez Paz was driving to his roofing job in Overland, Missouri, with his 51-year-old brother, Rolando Pérez Paz. With their home still in the background, an unmarked vehicle approached. Agents swarmed into the street, surrounding them, dragging the brothers from their work van. They were given as little information as possible, with agents only informing them that there was no warrant, there was no formal piece of paper to outline their fate, only that they were illegal, they were under arrest, and they would be promptly deported.

Pérez Paz’s partner, Glendy Marisol González de la Cruz, stayed in Overland without him, for a while. In June of 2025, she gave birth to their third daughter. She worked two grueling manual labor jobs, just trying to keep a roof over their heads and food in their bellies. But the bills piled up faster than the checks came in. There was always too much month left at the end of the money, and the walls of pressure were closing in fast.

Both Pérez Paz and González de la Cruz fled to the United States without legal status, due to mounting violence and widespread poverty in their home country of Guatemala. After her partner was unceremoniously deported, González de la Cruz was actively working through an asylum case. But tensions were mounting under the Trump Administration. People were being shot by masked agents in unmarked cars in the streets, disappearing from their homes and jobs, never to be seen again, and with nowhere left to turn, she packed up her girls and voluntarily returned to Guatemala, where she at least had a partner.

Both Nixon Giovanni Pérez Paz and Glendy Marisol González de la Cruz were just found bound and shot to death in a Guatemalan sugarcane field. Their mouths were gagged, their hands and feet bound, their bodies covered in the evidence of physical trauma. Their 14-month-old daughter, Giovanni, was dehydrated and inconsolable beside her mother’s body – all of them victims of the very violence they tried so desperately to escape in a country that preaches what it does not practice: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

A spokesperson for ICE has effectively spoken around the point, only confirming that Pérez Paz was located and arrested by agents for “being unlawfully present in the United States.” The spokesperson went on to cite two drunken driving convictions that could not be found in the Missouri court database and a 2010 open-container charge against Pérez Paz that prosecutors dropped.

“Since Day One, DHS law enforcement has been delivering on President Trump’s promise to the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens including murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang members, and terrorists. ICE remains committed to removing criminal aliens from our communities by enforcing immigration laws and maintaining the integrity of our borders.”

Nixon’s brother, Rolando, said, “If immigration hadn’t picked up my brother, my sister-in-law would still be alive, and the children wouldn’t be going through this sorrow. Unfortunately, immigration — the [U.S.] government — doesn’t see that. It makes no difference to them.”

Pérez Paz and González de la Cruz were not shot in the street with fanfare. No one witnessed and recorded their deaths to go viral on Twitter. Their names won’t be found on the list of “deaths in custody,” because their feet weren’t even on American soil when Immigration and Customs Enforcement took their lives. They’re simply two people who will be discussed in a closed-door meeting as the prime and perfect example of what the system is supposed to do. Two deaths. Infinite and insurmountable trauma. Half a hemisphere away from the Western World. No culpability to be found. No one to answer to.

America, under Donald Trump’s leadership, has created a seedy, shadowed underworld of systematic, hands-off murder, sending throngs of Brown people to their deaths under the guise of a simple, legal deportation, in a way that rings sickeningly similar to the SS sending throngs of Jewish people into a simple, legal “shower.”

No one fired a gun in the street because, in cases like this, no one had to. They simply played the long game and secured a clean, outsourced kill. ICE’s culpability ended the moment Pérez Paz was put on a plane to Guatemala, and that very architecture of deniability is the whole point.

As they commit cold-blooded murder in our streets, they’re counting on you to look away from the standard, “run-of-the-mill” deportations that are happening en masse across this country. The ones that get no press. The ones that don’t go viral.

Don’t.

This is the exact machine we’re intended to rage against.

53 years later, there’s a concerted effort afoot to rehabilitate him, presumably so our current president’s corruption can also be normalized, as Matt K. Lewis admits in his essay at NOTUS, entitled “In Defense of Nixonmaxxing.”

It cannot be normalized. The whole “Nixonmaxxing” meme needs to end here and now, without any fanfare or social media hype. Mashing up old reels of Nixon with Drake overdubs and Guns ‘N Roses dissolves and TikTok reels does not and will not change what Nixon (and Ford’s pardon) did to this country.

JD Vance has been the highest profile purveyor of the “Nixon is cool now” lie, even making an appearance at the Nixon library in Orange County to smooth over Nixon’s crooked, megalomaniacal ways. JD Vance, don’t forget, was not even a zygote when Nixon held office.

“If Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12-hour news story. Like, the idea that it would have taken down a presidency is crazy,” Vance told his audience with a straight face.

NIXON WAS A CROOK. THE WATERGATE BREAK-IN AND COVER-UP WERE CRIMINAL ACTS.

Vance’s comment is an indictment of today’s media, while glossing over Nixon’s criminality. Nixon was facing impeachment because back in that era there were still Republicans who believed in their oath of office. It would have been a bipartisan affair, which is why Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott, Senator Barry Goldwater, and House Minority Leader John Rhodes — all Republicans — went up to the White House to tell him he needed to resign before he was impeached.

And even then, he wouldn’t have resigned if he wasn’t in danger of taking the entire Republican Party with him. Remember that when you hear that Trump’s approval rating is lower than Nixon’s before he resigned.

Let’s remember for a minute why his support collapsed. He might have survived the hearings by lying or making his lieutenants lie, as he was wont to do. He might have even survived the Saturday Night Massacre. But the White House tapes did him in, because they exposed all of the lies and cover-up of the break-in at the Democratic National Headquarters and more.

Nixon was able to hold them back from Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski until July, 1974, when the Supreme Court at the time^* ruled unanimously that Nixon could not claim executive privilege with regard to the tapes, ruling that they must be turned over immediately and opening them up to the public, including the “smoking gun” tape proving his involvement in the Watergate scandal. Nixon fostered a culture of corruption in his White House. Spiro Agnew resigned because he was taking cash bribes and extorting government contractors right out of his White House office. The entire White House was a hotbed of utter corruption and wanton disregard for the law.

Which brings me to JD Vance’s other comment, where he confessed his liking for Nixon. “Young senator, vice president, writes some best-selling books, is hated by the media. It kind of sounds like JD Vance. I’ve always liked Richard Nixon,” he told his adoring audience.

“I’m actually fascinated by Nixon as a character in history. I think that his historical legacy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, but I think deservedly so,” Vance added.

No. No, and again NO. For all the reasons stated above and this one below:

RICHARD NIXON WAS A CROOK.

It doesn’t matter what else he was. It doesn’t matter what else he did. It doesn’t balance the scales. Nixon was first and foremost a crook, who blemished whatever legacy he may have left behind with his crookedness. Trying to whitewash history and make people forget he was a crook by releasing some strategic mashups with contemporary music is a lame effort to smear lipstick all over that crooked dirty pig.

This is what Matt Lewis is selling:

As usual, the answer is all about Donald Trump. The two men, needless to say, have some things in common. So if you rehabilitate Nixon, you normalize and elevate Trump in the process.

Like Trump, Nixon was highly combative. He played up culture war divisions to win elections. Once elected, he embraced the imperial presidency (“When the president does it, that means that it is not illegal”). He even tried to impede investigations and use executive agencies for his own political purposes (sound familiar?).

Why yes, Matt, it sounds all too familiar. And it’s so good of you to actually admit the snow job you and Vance and the Nixon Library are trying to pull over on people, especially younger people who didn’t live through that era.

As I said earlier, much of our current pickle is due to a cowardly media. But here’s what Lewis thinks about that particular issue.

Ultimately, Nixon was taken down by the media — as well as the so-called “deep state” (a point recently made by Vance, which I take to mean “Deep Throat,” the pseudonym for secret informant Mark Felt, then-deputy director of the FBI). Sure, Nixon was forced to resign, but what was he supposed to do? The liberal media had a virtual monopoly on disseminating information, and this meant that even Nixon’s fellow Republicans didn’t have the backbone to support him.

Let’s sit with that a minute. What Lewis is saying there is that yes, Nixon was a crook, and yes, he was exposed and forced to resign, but that’s a terrible thing. If only the media had been dishonest and not as quick to report facts, Nixon’s presidency might have survived.

This is how utterly corrupt conservative thought is. Some conservatives would call it “moral relativism,” something they despise unless they’re doing it. The whole reason Fox News was born was to make sure there was a media environment which could propagandize and normalize the criminal acts and intents of the right wing. So when Lewis observes:

In this regard, Trump’s presidency is the fulfillment of the dream that things would have gone differently for Nixon — for America — if the pesky corporate media didn’t control everything (part of the reason Trump is so keen on having his loyalists take over CBS, etc.).

He’s right. This is Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch’s wet dream. It was the impetus for starting a network and strategically placing it on cable, in bars, in hotels, and even online in order to supply a steady stream of right wing propaganda to distract the public from the criminal acts of their Republican leaders and the corporations which support them.

One last intellectually dishonest thought from Lewis to wrap it all up:

Compared to Trump, Richard Nixon was a very good man. Watching these videos makes me like him even more — makes me long for a leader, flawed though he was, who was capable of introspection, someone who cared about policy and ideas and was able to give a speech about them. For these reasons, I see it as a positive development that so many young Republicans might now have a better president to admire.

GOOD LORD, MAN! NIXON WAS A CROOK.

The fact that Trump is a bigger crook is irrelevant. Nixon was a ruthless, rudderless, power hungry man whose “introspection” level was limited to how to advance his own interests both with regard to policy and his own power.
