Tomorrow, Missouri voters have a choice: Public schools or billionaires. It’s really that stark. Amendment 5 asks voters to repeal their state income tax and phase in other, unspecified taxes to cover the lost revenue. The current state income tax rate is 4 percent on corporations and a maximum of 4.7 percent on personal income above $9,191.00.
Missouri parent and organizer Sierra Kilpatrick joined Donna Schwartz Mills and I on a Substack Live so Kilpatrick could explain the draconian consequences of this amendment’s passage.
“It's our government trying to repeal income tax in the state of Missouri, which would then create an $8 billion deficit in our state, which we are already in a deficit,” Kilpatrick explained. “And they plan to make up that deficit by increasing sales tax on services. So haircuts, plumbing, your plumber that comes, HVAC, things like that, which would be devastating to a lot of people because they already don't pay sales tax on all those different amenities.”
For perspective, the current state deficit is $138 million. This amendment would cause an $8 billion overall deficit with a $1.4 billion-with-a-b deficit to public schools.
Kilpatrick noted that for public schools in areas with local property taxes, they might be okay for awhile, but rural schools would be wiped out right away, just the way the federal government has wiped out rural hospitals and basic healthcare in rural areas.
