The Saturday Stack
Grab a cup of coffee and settle in for some great Saturday reads
Do you feel like you’re just inundated with newsletters? My inbox looks like a desk piled high with paperwork. But on Saturdays, I try to read the ones I missed and there are always some great articles that stick with me all week.
I thought it might be useful to curate those into a “Saturday Stack” of articles for you to read and savor with your morning coffee and a sweet treat. I plan to make this an ongoing feature in the hopes that you’ll enjoy or be informed or both by the articles I include here.
Here we go!
Hunter Biden on The Seduction of Cynicism
“There are periods in the life of a republic when corruption hides because it must.
When the hiding stops, something has broken.”
Scott McFarlane clues us in on the new pathway to big payouts for J6 cop beaters.
Former CBS News reporter Scott McFarlane is a must-read. Every day he sends out an email letting us know what is happening and what he’s reporting on. But he also has other reports about important things, and this is one. That fund isn’t dead. It’s alive and well, and McFarlane explains how it’s going to work.
A judge convicted Weyer in 2023 of five counts. The Justice Department argued for a 30-month prison term for her. Prosecutors said, “Weyer filmed herself commanding rioters to ‘go’ and ‘tear it down’ referring to the metal barrier between the mob and law enforcement.”
According to my reporting from 2021, shortly after Weyer’s arrest, she was defiant in the days after the attack, denying the damage and the horrors that unfolded. She allegedly wrote: “I’m happy.”
Paul Krugman argues for a Medicare buy-in as the way to Medicare for All.
What, then, should Democrats of good will — that is, people who want their fellow citizens to have affordable access to quality healthcare like citizens of every other advanced country — support? Should they call for an all-out effort to implement the best policy — Medicare for All — that is likely to face significant pushback and political roadblocks, albeit unjustified? Or should they settle for a strategy that is likely to involve a more drawn-out process to achieve universal coverage, but is also more likely to turn into reality?
Just when you thought you knew everything about Max Miller, there’s more. Always, there’s more. The American Prospect has receipts, and it’s as terrible as you think.
“Can you just track this guy down now?” To the other dispatcher, he said, “I was cut off by a man in a Tesla … [who] then rolled down his window and said that I’m going to cut your throat and your daughter’s. And he said you’re a dirty Jew. I’m going to fucking kill you all. And I know who you are and where you live. And I followed him, and he rolled down his window, and I rolled down my window, so I could hear what he was saying …”
But there are some serious problems with his story. Spoiler: The man in the Tesla has records, because Tesla records everything.
Over at Baking. It’s better than Murder, Debrianna Mansini has thoughts on health insurance, finances, and bread.
Standing in front of the wall cooler at Smith’s, I looked over the egg selection, trying to remember which brands had the new salmonella risks, which came from family owned farms instead of a Trump supporting corporation and thus not getting rigorous enough inspections, and which eggs were on sale, calculating whether the 18 count would be measurably cheaper than a dozen. AND, did I have a coupon for it? Welcome to the era of Trumponomics. Ya’ll look over there while I rob you blind and tell you your life is fabulous. Decoys.
Tom Joad has a story about what people hear when they hear “Democrat.”
One of the men I had known since we were both young enough to believe that youth was permanent clapped a hand to my shoulder.
He did not smile.
“You know that most everybody in there hates your politics.”
I told him that I knew that. “They don’t dislike, they,” I paused looking more closely at him, “hate.”
He walked away, not intending to hurt my feelings I am sure.
Because it’s Saturday and you’ve been reading all day and for sure it’s 5:00 somewhere, the Better Filthiest Martini recipe is over at Wonkette. Make it and let me know how it is!
Happy Saturday, happy reading and farewell until next week!
